In-person learning

In 2023 and 2024, I mapped the Undercliffs National Nature Reserve in the strip map style of John Ogliby’s Britannia Road Atlas (1675). The three resulting maps will be exhibited in the Rotunda Gallery in Lyme Regis Museum from 23rd July to 13th September. Museum entry is needed to access the exhibition.

This is my fourth year taking part at Umborne Bridge Studio, Colyton, where I am joined by fellow artists Anna Brewster, Jane Llewellyn, Zee Jones, and Naomi Brookes. I will be showing a new body of work from my latest project focused on trees and rivers. Also, as usual, my nature journals will be available to view and new postcard packs featuring nature journaling illustrations are coming. Maps and prints from the Undercliffs project will also be available for sale. I have two free demonstrations on offer too, details below.

In this one-day introduction to nature journaling, Alex will show you some fundamentals of nature journaling with fun prompts and exercises that are suitable for level. We will begin with a simple sketchbook and pencil with a full morning of sketching by the riverside in Colyton (weather dependent). After lunch, we will return to the studio to work the morning’s observations into a page (or more!) of paintings and writing. Materials included, bring a packed lunch!
