Introduction to Coloured Pencil Course (4 weeks)

Monday October 7th to 28th 2024, 10am-12pm

Learn the fundamentals of coloured pencil technique including swatching, colour mixing through layering and blending, different types of marks, and a range of natural subjects. The latter half of the course will comprise a project in which you will create a portrait of an animal, pet or bird on toned paper. Derwent procolour pencils will be used in this course (provided for you to use during the class). The course schedule is as follows:

Week 1: Monday 7th October 2024, 10-12 – Getting used to the pencils. Swatching and other exercises. In this class, you will learn how coloured pencil works – how to achieve different effects and textures, how to blend and how to burnish.

Week 2: Monday 14th October 2024, 10-12 – A simple subject. We will work on accurately representing a simple subject such as a conker, chestnut, seed pod, or other autumnal item!

Week 3: Monday 21st October 2024, 10-12 – Your coloured pencil project Part 1. Based on a nature or animal photograph (either one of your own, pet photos welcome, or one of Alex’s bird photos), we will begin a coloured pencil drawing based on the skills learnt so far. Toned paper will be used for this exercise.

Week 4: Monday 28th October 2024, 10-12 – Your coloured pencil project Part 2. Coloured pencil work takes quite a bit of time, in this class you will continue your coloured pencil project with individual help and guidance from Alex.

 

This course is held at The Nature Journaling Centre, Umborne Bridge Studio, Unit 1 Dolphin Street, Colyton, Devon EX24 6LU (apart from on the dates given above). The course price is £95 including all materials (paper to keep, Inktense pencils to be used within the session only.)
